A career consists of 80 000 working hours. How do you want to use them? The international effective altruism movement has a Swedish branch with a website that provides some concrete answers to the question: How can I make a difference?

Some career paths are expected to have over a hundred times greater positive impact than others. Therefore, it might be a good idea to spend some of the career's 80,000 hours thinking about what to do with the rest of the time. The Career Guide takes 1-2 hours to go through and can be a good first step.

It´s background is the effective altruism movement, which was born approx. ten years ago in Oxford, UK. Philosophers William MacAskill and Toby Ord then launched Giving What We Can, a community for people who donate 10% of their income to the most effective charities. MacAskill also co-founded 80,000 Hours, which focuses on career counselling.

Since then, effective altruism has grown into an international movement with thousands of people and dozens of organizations working in various ways on issues related to effective world improvement. The ambition is to find the best ways to help others, and then act on that.

The Swedish Career Guide is aimed primarily at people who are early in their careers, but the team at Effective altruism Sweden believe that world-improvers of all ages and life stages can find value in the content. They also offer free counselling sessions centered around impact and effective altruism.
